unintended consequences
Everything I do has lots of effects I'm not aware of.
I've been staying up late to get some solitude when I've been in social settings (a lot more of them this time of year). Last night I took my littlest to his violin lesson for the first time. He knows his routine, I could just sit and watch, I know one other parent and the teacher Sue, so no problem. Only Sue had her camera and heard that I like taking pictures and so asked me to take some pictures during the class (I guess she's looking at getting some promo shots). No specific instructions, just take some shots. I swear I'm going to have to start telling people I've stopped taking pictures as a hobby and started assembling computers, I'll get fewer requests for help that way! Actually I was tickled of course, and I hope I got some good ones.
But after coming home and running the kids through the bedtime routine, I was eager for some time alone, and as my wife conked out around 10:00, I figured there would be nothing to keep me from hanging out, watching Jon Stewart and assorted TV dreck, surfing, playing freecell, etc. -- if I leave before she falls asleep, there's a chance she won't be able to, and might even come down to join me, in which case she doesn't get enough sleep herself and it throws her off the next day.
But I managed to wake her up when I came up at 2 am. Having been asleep for hours, it wasn't easy for her to go back to sleep. And I could feel her resentment as I tried unsuccessfully to fall asleep for an hour or so.
So I'm going to have to limit my insomniac downtimes and find some other way to satisfy my need to be alone.
In pleasanter news, I'm really starting to enjoy playing "Tanglewood Tree" on mando. There's one part where I'm having trouble picking up the rhythm, and I can't always maintain it perfectly, but it's really starting to click and I'm loving it.
